"At one time Elora supported eight hotels. The first, established in 1833, was a refitted log house that had been abandoned by the Matthews family from Vermont; the original settlers in Wellington County. Another four were built in the early settlement on Elora's south bank. They were all log or wood frame buildings and all but one eventually went up in flames. The Elora Hotel at the south end of the Victoria Bridge (our present walking bridge) was the only establishment that could be considered a real hotel; the others were small taverns. Four hotels existed on the north side of the river. They were constructed with limestone or brick and are still standing today. They were the Commercial, Royal Arms, American and Dalby. Join us to hear their amazing stories."
